Success!

preDevCamp Baltimore/DC went great! We had 13 people show up despite some scheduling hiccups. Everyone had a good time and there are both Baltimore and DC/NoVa meet-up groups forming to continue learning and discussing together.

If you are in Baltimore, join: http://groups.google.com/group/webos-baltimore

If you are Washington DC or Northern Virginia, join: http://groups.google.com/group/webos-dev-dc

We have extra books and we’ll be giving them away at future meet ups, so make sure you join a group!

Thank you!

Many, many thanks to

  • the attendees for coming out to the event
  • O’Reilly for donating all the books
  • Dan, Lisa, & Greg for putting this all together

I hope you all had a good time and learned something new!

Projects for Non-Developers

Non-developers are more than welcome to attend! We need people to:

  • Make an Omnigraffle or Visio stencil
  • Test other people’s application
  • Help with planning and wire framing
  • Come up with app idea
  • Help developers with CSS
  • Learn HTML, JavaScript, and CSS — our event will be a library!
  • Help your local organizer keep their sanity

And I bet you can think of other stuff you could help with too. Stop by your local preDevCamp tomorrow and help out!

Event Update

I am very excited to announce the NEW event details!

Details

When
Saturday, August 8th, 2009 from 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Where

UMBC AOK Library: 1000 Hilltop Circle, Baltimore, MD 21250 — http://aok.lib.umbc.edu/directions/

Call me if you get lost trying to find the library, 443-977-6733

Parking: Library parking meters and permits are not enforced on weekends.

Wifi: The wireless network for visitors is called UMBC Visitors.

Special Note: My most sincere apologies to the Washington DC & Northern VA. There was no way we could all fit in the Panera. The library has more than enough room. The first floor allows talking and food is allowed in the Atrium.

Food: There is a great local restaurant. If everybody brings $5 we can order pizza.

Tentative Schedule

There will be repeating session of the same introductory material. The whole time feel free to  pull up to a table with other developers to talk, plan, and code!

Session I: 12pm – 2PM

Session II: 2PM – 4PM

Session III: 4PM – 6PM

Each session will cover:

  • Intro to webOS & the Mojo SDK
  • How to Install and Use the SDK
  • A Guided Hello World
  • Beyond the Basics & How to navigate developer.palm.com

About the Event

That’s a long event time. You can come and stay as long as you want when you want. In general, this is an un-conference style event with some presentations and tutorials being given during the more structure times.

What will be covered? You will get at least how to use the SDK to get an application start and build a “Hello World” application. With people coming and going, I can’t guarantee much more; but with the SDK available and fellow developers at hand, who knows how far you can go in 1 day!

I already know the SDK. Please consider volunteering! Contact me at alice.carback+predevcamp@gmail.com and let me know what material you can  help people out with. Presentations, tutorials, or just being on hand to answer questions would be awesome!

There will be prizes. You could win a copy of Palm webOS from O’Reilly. We’ll have a couple activities (details to come) where the prize will be a copy of the book.

I want someone to write an application for me. Also, awesome. Please email me and info@predevcamp.org and let the organizers know.

What do I need? Mostly a computer and a willingness to learn, but here’s a brief check list:

  • Your laptop and everything you need for it: power cord, adapters, travel mouse, etc.
  • The SDK. If you haven’t registered at developer.palm.com and installed the SDK I highly recommend it. We’ll show you how to use it.
  • Powerstrip. We won’t have an outlet per person on the on the wall so we’ll have to share.
  • Notebook and pencil. It wouldn’t hurt to jot down notes or ideas.
  • Some money for food. We’ll be in downtown Silver Spring  so you’ll have some options other than Panera.
  • See: http://predevcamp.org/2009/08/04/im-going-to-predevcamp-and-i-am-bringing/

If you have any questions or I didn’t cover something, please do not hesitate to email me at alice.carback+predevcamp@gmail.com

Alternate Venue Option

Idea: I can have the event at the AOK Library at UMBC in the Atrium. It would be free Wifi and parking. However, it is farther away for the DC folk.

DC folk, chime in: can you still make it?

Updated Event Schedule

Same place and same day folks, but after talking to the general manager at the Panera we are changing event times.

Their main rush of customers tomorrow will be from 11am to 2pm. So as to not disturb their business, I am moving the event to 2:30 to 6:30

Please remember we are using up space at their cafe. I will be buying lunch there  and I encourage you to pick up a snack or drink too.

2:30 – 3:30 — Introductions and Installfest
Getting everyone set up with software and resources to develop for Palm webOS.

3:30 – 4:30 –Introduction to webOS and Mojo
Review the general architecture of webOS and of a Mojo application.

4:30 – 5:30 — Hands on Development
Go through “Hello World” and try out different widgets and API’s.

5:30 – 6:30 — Moving Beyond the Basics
Discussion: Now that you’ve seen the SDK, the API’s, and the widgets, let’s talk about what you need to plan, design, and build a full application.

Books and Coupon Codes
Remember we will be giving away developer books and announce a PreCentral.com coupon code.

Sponsorship
There is still time to sponsor the the Washington DC / Baltimore event! Please contact me at alic...@gmail.com if you can donate venue space, money, time, or purchase every bagels!

Venue Upgrade

We probably need a venue upgrade. As excited as I am to see the attendee list double in the last week, with this many people we really should consider a new venue if we can manage it on short notice.

If you know of any companies or restaurants or what have you that are will to lend us the space on Saturday, please let them know just giving us a space is sponsorship and will be broadcast there name everywhere we can.
